Components of a Phone Number

Post by muskanhossain »

While phone number formats vary slightly between countries and service providers, the general structure can be broken down into the following parts:

2.1 Country Code (International Dialing Code)
The country code is a numeric prefix assigned to each country or region by the ITU. It is used to route calls internationally. For example:

United States and Canada: +1

United Kingdom: +44

India: +91

Australia: +61

The country code is essential for distinguishing calls hungary phone number data countries. When dialing internationally, the "+" sign indicates the international call prefix, which varies by country (e.g., 011 in the U.S., 00 in many European countries).

2.2 National Destination Code (NDC) / Area Code
After the country code comes the National Destination Code (NDC), often referred to as the area code. It identifies a specific geographic region or mobile network within a country. For landline numbers, this corresponds to cities or regions, while for mobile numbers, it may correspond to a mobile carrier.

For example, in the United States:

New York City has area code 212

Los Angeles has area code 310

In the UK, area code 20 is for London.

2.3 Subscriber Number (SN)
The subscriber number is the unique number assigned to an individual or organization within a given area code. It distinguishes one user from another in the same region or on the same network.

For example, in the number +1 212 555 1234:

"+1" is the country code (USA)

"212" is the area code (New York City)

"555 1234" is the subscriber number

2.4 Trunk Prefix
The trunk prefix is used in some countries when dialing domestic long-distance numbers. In many nations, this is "0". It is used before the area code when dialing a number within the same country but outside the local area.

For instance, in the UK, to dial London from outside London:

Dial 020 7946 1234
Here, "0" is the trunk prefix, "20" is the area code.

When dialing internationally, this trunk prefix is omitted.
