Garachico offers a wide variety of places to visit despite its small size.
The “Casa” or historic residences
The Casa de los Ponte is a mansion of the Ponte family who founded Garachico . The moj data hotel was built on the ruins of their old family home consumed by flames during a fire. It is one of the oldest buildings in the region.
The house of the Marquis of Quinta Roja is a beautiful residence that temporarily housed the Franciscan monks after its construction in the 16th century. It was rebuilt by the first Marquis of Quinta Roja in the 17th century.
The palace-house of the Counts of La Gomera is a large stone-built building, also known by the evocative name of Casa de Piedra . Its remarkable construction, rebuilt between the 16th and 19th centuries after the volcanic eruption, is admirable.
The Casa de los Molinos survived the passage of the lava in 1706. This flour mill that once turned to feed the entire town has now been transformed into an exhibition site. Although it no longer functions as a mill, visitors can still learn a lot about the activity of the region.
The San Miguel Castle was built under the command of King Philip II in 1575. It served to defend Garachico against invasions and pirate attacks.
Churches and convents
The parish church of Santa Ana. The construction of this church, emblem of Garachico , was begun in 1520 with the participation of Cristobal de Ponte , founder of the village and his wife. The deep deterioration that the lava inflicted on the building was not enough to erase its memory, because it was rebuilt in order to perpetuate its beauty. The church houses, among other things, a splendid baptismal font, and a Mexican image of the merciful Jesus. The whole, seen from the inside and the outside, forms an artistic masterpiece.
