As I mentioned at the beginning of this survey, I specifically avoided looking at proximity as an influencer for other destinations as a traveler. I investigated one local pack for each major city. The good news is that for many of your restaurant clients, there are going to be more than one opportunity to rank for a search like “best restaurant (city).” Unless the restaurant is in a very small city, Google is going to generate a variety of local packs based on the searcher’s location. So, that’s some hope to share.
What have we learned about local SEO for restaurants?
A short TL;DR you can easily share with your clients:

While you’ll likely need at least 100 local Google reviews to break into the pack, more than half of competitors have yet to break the 1,000 mark.
An average of 71 percent of competitors are showing a clear weakness by neglecting to respond to reviews - so get out there and start embracing customer service to differentiate your restaurant!
More than half of your competitors have earned critical reviews. If you don't have any yet, there's little you can do to earn them that are well-known enough for anonymous professional reviewers to visit you. In the meantime, don't sweat it.
Nearly three-quarters of your competitors are completely ignoring Google Posts. Take advantage by being proactive.
