What to do if your cloud provider disconnects you?

When AWS pulled the plug on Parler and other hyperscalers refused to take it on, it set a precedent that has companies concerned about business continuity. Experts interviewed by InformationWeek offer some insight into what steps organizations can take in such circumstances.

Parler’s recent expulsion from AWS and its reappearance on Epik, a Russian domain registrar, is a very specific case, but it speaks to the reality of the problems that can happen to other organizations — especially in a market dominated by three cloud hyperscalers. What can companies do if one of these cloud providers permanently shuts down service and the others refuse to accept a customer?

Jeff Valentine, CTO of CloudCheckr, says that while most companies are unlikely to face a situation exactly like Parler, there are broader scenarios that organizations should be aware of. “It’s probably a really small percentage of organizations that will go through this,” he says. “But it needs to be thought through before it happens.”

Beyond politics, Valentine said there are other reasons, such as sudden outages or cloud provider failures, for organizations to create plans to rescue their code and get back online quickly.

Aiven CTO Heikki Noosiainen also believes that the threat of a shutdown from all major cloud providers at once is very low for most enterprises — but companies may want to retain the ability to move code around for disaster recovery purposes. “Although rare, we do occasionally see large outages of Google, AWS, or Azure in one or more regions,” he says. And companies with very downtime-sensitive online business needs may want to be able to restore from backups.
