Google gave us plenty of time to prepare for the change, but many of us were reluctant to abandon our beloved UA. Some even mocked GA4 and its limitations. Others were skeptical about the need to change. Still others simply ignored the warning.

The day came on July 1, 2023, and UA was supposed to stop working. But to our surprise, UA continued collecting data for weeks, and even months, after the deadline.

We're not sure if this was a mistake on Google's part, or a gesture of compassion, or even a way to pressure us into moving to GA4.

We don't know for sure, but what we do know is that UA finally ceased to exist on September 8th, when Search Engine Land's UA property ran out of data. It was a sad day for many marketers, who had to say goodbye to their trusty analytics companion.
