Bill Gates surprised everyone by recently stating that very soon most work meetings will take place in the metaverse, using virtual reality glasses that will transport us to a world in which our avatars represent us in offices located in this new universe.
The health emergency situation of March 2020 threw us, whether we were prepared or not, into a context in which remote work was the undisputed protagonist. Meeting rooms were replaced by applications in which screens showed a mesh with the images of the people we were in contact with. The Metaverse goes one step further, replacing those two-dimensional meshes with a new three-dimensional universe in which the options go beyond what we can even imagine.
What exactly is the Metaverse?
The word 'metaverse' came to the fore last October when Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company Facebook would be renamed Meta, putting the focus on the imminent arrival of the new Metaverse. But this concept is not new, far from it. Numerous literary or audiovisual pieces architects mailing lists have explored this concept in one way or another, from works such as 'Ready Player One' - later adapted to film - to 'The Matrix' itself. More recently, Netflix gave us with San Junipero a metaverse in which our consciousness could be eternal after the death of our body.
Broadly speaking, the metaverse is nothing more than a space in which we can live virtual experiences that we will access through devices such as virtual reality glasses. Researcher Janet Murray defined it as “a magical Zoom meeting with the entire playful version of Animal Crossing.” The parallels are endless. And as we have said previously, the possibilities are endless.
What exactly is the Metaverse?
The arrival of the metaverse promises to turn our entire conception of the world upside down. This new technology is expected to bring with it the creation of millions of new jobs that will bring everyday experiences such as customer service to the digital world. The revolution will be such that some have dared to say that today we do not know the jobs that in a few years will make up a huge percentage of the jobs of the future.
The creation of this ambitious metaverse will revolutionize everything, but especially in the workplace. It is time to look to the future with the right lenses, and that's the right way to put it.
