Microsoft researchers are working on a new project to help secure low-cost Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
the challenge of securing the vast number of low-cost devices that are connected to and rely on the Internet,” according to the Sopris project’s website, which was officially launched on March 31.
"As part of this research, we tested different approaches to device security from chips to software and came to the hypothesis that the optimal approach to ensuring device security should have hardware roots but be kept up to date through updated software," the researchers explain.
The Sopris project includes research partnerships turkey whatsapp data Galen Hunt, principal investigator Ed Nightingale, and senior hardware architect George Leathy. The Walking Cat (@h0×0d on Twitter) has learned that the group also apparently includes senior director of silicon and systems architecture Rob Shearer.
Hunt has played key roles in a number of important past research projects related to Microsoft OS, including Singularity, Drawbridge, and Menlo.
The Sopris team has published its first technical report, titled “Seven Properties of Highly Secure Devices.” The paper notes that Sopris researchers are paying particular attention to the “tens of billions of devices running on microcontrollers” because they are not prepared to deal with the security challenges posed by Internet connections.
