What is the difference between tags and categories?

Post by numberlist »

In WordPress , categories can be either parent or child of each other. Often, tags in WordPress do not have this structure and are used quite randomly.

If you don't control how you add tags to posts, you'll likely end up with countless tags on your site. The problem is that many tags are used only once, making the tag page look the same as the post where you added the tag. This can create duplicate content, or at least content that's not very relevant.

By WordPress definition, categories allow you to broadly group post topics, while tags can be used to describe your post in more detail.

In an ideal world, we would use categories japan cell phone number list to group the content on our site into, say, eight to ten overarching segments. On our blog, these segments are, for example, Analytics, Content SEO , E-commerce , and Technical SEO. By keeping a limited set of categories, you can keep your site and content focused. Now, of course, you can break down your content even further, by grouping it more specifically. To do this, you should use tags.

The fact that categories can be hierarchical means you can better structure your content using only categories, if that's what you're looking for.

You can have a group of posts about trees and a subcategory or subgroup about pines. Makes sense, right? This also means you can have URLs like /category/trees/pines, which already show that structure right in the URL .
