Here we go! We're back with our expression of the day "digging your own grave". So, we'll start with the explanation of the words.
The first word is the verb "to dig", which means "to make a hole by removing material". So, for example, to dig in the earth.
Then, the word “sa” is a possessive adjective.
“Proper” is used to reinforce the possessive, therefore, to oneself.
And finally, “grave” is the pit where the dead are buried.
As for the meaning of the expression, then, originally, the expression would come from a proverb from the Bible: "He who digs a pit falls into it." So, whoever prepares a bad blow for someone will suffer the same consequences. So, in fact, it means causing one's own loss, being the cause of one's misfortune, doing something completely stupid that could harm oneself.
I will give you three examples, three different contexts so that you can better understand the meaning of the expression.
First example: "You are digging your own grave by eating hamburgers every day." So, here, we make the person understand that he is harming his own health, that he is causing his own downfall, that he is going to be the cause of his health problems, that he is going to be the cause of his misfortunes and that it is completely stupid to eat hamburgers every day because it harms oneself.
Second example: "He started a rumor about his boss at work. Sorry, but he dug his own grave." So, here, we understand that the person started a rumor about his boss at work and, therefore, it is something that is not really intelligent in the sense that it will probably harm this person, it will cause harm to the person who started the rumor, since it is about his boss, and that suddenly he risks knowing it and, therefore, there risks being consequences for the person and for the maintenance of his position at work.
Third example: "She dug her own grave by stealing the family's money." So, here, we see that this is a person who stole money from his family, so, it's something really wrong, really stupid, something that should not be done and, therefore, the person caused his own loss, he will be the cause of his own misfortunes.
