Although the Corona crisis has convinced some previously skeptical seniors of the value of digitalization, the big digital push has not materialized among older people. This is shown by a study by the digital association Bitkom, for which representative surveys were conducted among more than 1,000 people over the age of 65 in January and July 2020. According to the study, in July seven out of ten people aged 65 and over (69 percent) said that they see digitalization as an opportunity - an increase of 5 percentage points compared to the beginning of the year (64 percent).
Three out of ten seniors (29 percent) currently europe gambling data see digitalization as a threat, compared to 33 percent in January. Almost one in two (45 percent) are now at least open to technological innovations, compared to 38 percent at the beginning of the year. The proportion of older Internet users, however, has hardly changed this year: one in two people aged 65 and over are still online (July: 49 percent, January: 48 percent). By comparison, in 2014 the figure was only 38 percent. "Digital technologies have proven their worth in many areas during the corona pandemic," says Bitkom President Achim Berg. "But seniors still find it difficult to take the step into new digital territory - more support is needed."
