As editor, Helmut Schmidt influenced the “Zeit” almost as much as the great Marion Countess Dönhoff: in the 1950s, after an internal power struggle, she laid the political foundation for her jubilant newspaper.

In the recently published birthday edition, Matthias Nass and Theo Sommer have researched quotes in books, interviews and other publications: What would Helmut Schmidt say to us today? According austria rcs data to Nass and Sommer, when asked "Could you kiss someone who, in your opinion, makes the wrong choice," Helmut Schmidt gives the following answer: "You don't always have to agree."

With his answer to the kiss question, the late "Zeit" editor and Federal Chancellor explains in these seven words why readers love and respect your newspaper - and more importantly, why people like me have always seen it as a role model. Over the decades, "Zeit" cultivated the ability to accept other opinions and at the same time to formulate its own position with linguistic grandeur and clever wit.
