Since its launch in 2021, the Digital Kit programme , promoted by the Spanish government within the framework of the Next Generation EU European funds , has represented one of the most ambitious initiatives for the digitalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and self-employed workers in Spain. Three years later, the balance is positive, although there are challenges to overcome. In this article, we analyse the results achieved to date and the main challenges that remain to ensure long-term success.
Objectives and initial budget of the program

Over these three years, the Digital Kit has managed to mobilize significant resources and generate a positive impact on the Spanish business community:
More than 150,000 SMEs and self-employed workers have benefited : To date, it is estimated that the programme has reached around 150,000 companies and self-employed workers, which represents a positive response to the call for applications and a general acceptance by the sector.
Booming ICT sector : The programme has enabled the growth of the information and communications technology (ICT) industry in Spain, with a wide network of more than 4,000 accredited digital solution providers to offer their services to SMEs.
Impact on digitalization : According to studies by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, companies that have received aid from the Digital Kit have improved their online presence , internal management and cybersecurity , increasing, in many cases, their competitiveness at national and international level.
Main achievements
Improving digitalisation in small businesses : The Digital Kit has been one of the first initiatives to reach such a large number of small businesses, many of which, before the programme, did not have a minimum digital infrastructure. Thanks to the aid, the digital gap has been reduced in sectors such as commerce, hospitality, tourism and education, which have been able to access key tools for their management and survival in an increasingly digitalised environment.
Accelerating the digital transition in the public sector : SMEs are not the only beneficiaries of the programme. Self-employed workers and smaller companies in the public sector have also benefited, allowing for an acceleration of the digitalisation of the local and regional public sector .
Promoting public-private collaboration : One of the greatest successes of the programme has been the close collaboration between public administrations and private technology companies, which has facilitated the design of solutions better adapted to the real needs of SMEs.
