Until September 2017, communications in Norilsk and the Norilsk Industrial Region (NIR) were provided only by satellite channels. According to ComNews, this not only slowed down the digital transformation at MMC Norilsk Nickel, but also created problems for this mining and metallurgical holding in attracting young specialists from other regions of the country.
Despite the fact that 176 slovenia whatsapp resource thousand people live in the NPR, and Norilsk is one of the five northernmost cities in the world, not a single operator agreed to build a fiber-optic highway in the region. This led to the fact that MMC Norilsk Nickel independently took on the project and invested in it at the expense of the corporate budget. For this purpose, Norilsk Nickel founded the project company Edinstvo in May 2015.
fiber-optic communication line from Novy Urengoy (where fiber-optic cables from Rostelecom, MTS, and Zummer arrive) to Norilsk. The 956-km-long Novy Urengoy-Norilsk optical communication line passed through the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug and Krasnoyarsk Krai, crossing the Yenisei. The capacity of the fiber-optic communication line was 40 Gbit/s, and before the launch of the optics, all of Norilsk was content with satellite Internet channels with a total capacity of 1 Gbit/s.

The subsidiary of the mining and metallurgical company Norilsk Nickel, OOO Edinstvo, has launched a fiber-optic communication line (FOCL) into trial operation in Norilsk. The project was fully financed by Norilsk Nickel itself, with investments in the creation of the trunk communication line amounting to 2.5 billion rubles. The FOCL will meet the needs of PAO MMC Norilsk Nickel and the population of Norilsk in a high-quality communication channel. The Big Four operators are already switching trunk networks from satellite communication channels to fiber optics.
With the advent of optics in Norilsk, all local Internet providers and the "big four" cellular companies connected to it. In particular, MegaFon reported in mid-2023 that about 97% of the total data transfer volume in Norilsk in its network is already on the LTE network. The new Internet access speeds were also appreciated by subscribers who began to actively connect to mobile and fixed networks.

However, there was only one fiber-optic cable to Norilsk, and in the event of accidents or technical work on the main line, expensive and slow satellite channels had to be used again. Therefore, in 2019, MMC Norilsk Nickel agreed to the idea of laying a backup fiber-optic line to Norilsk, again entrusting the organization of construction work to its subsidiary, Edinstvo.
General Director of Unity LLC Tatyana Mokhova:
"No operator took on the project, so Norilsk Nickel decided to invest money, effort and energy in it. Nine years later, we can confidently say that the project was a success, despite all the doubts at the beginning, the risks and problems that had to be faced.
There are no other fiber-optic communication lines to Norilsk, and "Edinstvo" has a huge responsibility to ensure that the connection is uninterrupted. It is for this purpose that, in addition to the main line, we laid a backup line. For additional backup of the crossing over the Yenisei, we installed radio relay stations - this radio bridge across the river is, in fact, the third line of defense.
