According to the Who Is service, the domain gitlife.ru was registered on January 28, 2022 by an unnamed private individual (the registrar was "Reg.ru").

A source close to SberTech told ComNews that OSChina and Gitee have not refused to cooperate with Russia, but for geopolitical reasons have decided to avoid publicity.

A ComNews correspondent’s china whatsapp number databaserequest to Gitee about the reasons for the refusal of a public form of partnership with 3Logic Group and the abandonment of the plan to create a Russian joint venture remained unanswered.

Kirill Pikhtovnikov, Deputy General Director for Production at RTK IT LLC (part of the Rostelecom Group), suggested that if the accessible mobile version of the gitlife.ru website is based on Gitee, then we are talking about a deeper Russian localization, and not about ending cooperation. "Several open source repositories of varying levels of development and functionality are already operating in Russia. I believe that until the moment when possible competition between repositories does not affect the quality of services provided to developers, the number of these services can be ignored. The main thing is that they make a high level of development tools available to a wide range of Russian developers," Kirill Pikhtovnikov believes.

Not Gitlife alone

Several creators of Russian repositories are trying to attract domestic developers. Among these repositories is Mos.Hub, which has been open for use by the Moscow Department of Information Technology since May 30, 2023. On June 23, 2023, Rostelecom PJSC, in parallel with the efforts of the Ministry of Digital Development, created the RTK-Phoenix open source repository. In August 2023, the FinTech Association announced that it had opened the repository for financial institutions. On March 1, 2024, Sberbank gave developers access to the GitVerse repository.

Thousands of the most popular and sought-after Chinese repositories available on the Russian platform gitlife.ru will appear exclusively on GitVerse - a platform for working with source code.

The creators of the two repositories - Sberbank PJSC, the Moscow Department of Information Technology, and the Russian Foundation for the Development of Information Technology (RFRIT), which ensured the creation of the national repository and control over its operation, did not respond to questions from a ComNews correspondent. The FinTech Association also refrained from commenting.

Position of the Deputy Minister

During the plenary session at the II Federal Forum on Digitalization and IT in the Chemical and Petrochemical Industry "Digital Chemistry", Deputy Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media of the Russian Federation Sergey Kuchushev noted that there are at least four repositories in Russia. When asked by the moderator of the session, General Director of ComNews LLC Leonid Konik, whether the Russian Federation needs multiple repositories and whether the Ministry of Digital Development intends to achieve the creation of a single repository, Sergey Kuchushev replied that he has always advocated for one concept: to use a minimum amount of regulation and use the maximum number of opportunities for growth. "Quality products are created in competition, and if you try to regulate it, nothing good will come of it. Accordingly, no, we do not plan to regulate the creation of repositories. Moreover, we welcome their creation and the creation of conditions for the open source market to grow as productively as possible," Sergey Kuchushev noted.

The Deputy Head of the Ministry of Digital Development also mentioned that none of the Russian open source platforms has yet become the main one, where all developers would like to come. "If we create one, it will be a serious achievement within the framework of current development," concluded Sergey Kuchushev.
