TikTok, one step away from its last dance in the United States

This is the latest move by the US government against the Chinese social media platform, motivated by concerns about the threat it could pose to the country's security. TikTok will have to choose between being sold to US ownership or being banned in the country .


The House of Representatives approved the bill last month, with 352 votes in favor and 65 against. Shou Zi Chew , CEO of TikTok, compared the possible ban of the app to an attack on the constitutional right of Americans to free expression.

The only step separating this bill from being actually processed is the signature of US President Joe Biden , who has already revealed his intention to validate this law. This will force TikTok to sell its application to an American company in order to disassociate itself from China.

The US would thus seek to quell its fears over the handling of user information by the social network and its use as a propaganda tool by the Chinese Communist Party at a time of tension between the two countries. For its part, TikTok has repeatedly denied its ties to the Chinese government.
