Tobey Maguire plays Captain Sam Cahill, a soldier deployed in Afghanistan who was presumed dead after his helicopter was shot down. Back home Sam's brother Tommy Jake Gyllenhaal and Sam's wife Grace Natalie Portman came together in mourning. But Sam was not killed but became a prisoner of war. When Sam finally returns home it's clear that he's dealing with severe PTSD and even his family doesn't know how to support him.

The film is also not centered on American soldiers but the creative filmmaking of Dunkirk creates a sense of urgency and immersion. Why is that?
