The digital infrastructure for the energy transition is coming: With the market analysis announced for tomorrow by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the mandatory installation of intelligent measuring systems begins.
"The long-awaited smart meter rollout will ensure that our energy infrastructure becomes significantly smarter. Tomorrow's launch can perhaps best be compared to the introduction of the first smartphones: the hardware is giving rise to completely new applications," says Bitkom energy expert Robert Spanheimer.
"The variety of future services that will be based middle east gambling data on smart meters can only be guessed at at the moment. The particularly secure communications infrastructure also offers completely new application possibilities for other sectors, such as healthcare."
The obligation to install so-called smart meters, which was enshrined in the law on the digitalization of the energy transition passed in 2016, only comes into effect now, as the BSI first had to certify at least three smart meter gateways. They enable particularly secure communication and ensure a high standard of data protection.
This means that the installation of intelligent measuring systems is mandatory, but only if the annual electricity consumption is more than 6,000 kWh or if controllable consumption devices and systems are used in accordance with the Renewable Energy Sources Act or the Combined Heat and Power Act with an output of more than 7 kW.
